One of the main reasons a salad costs more than a Big Mac is because the meat and dairy industries are heavily subsidized in the United States. Grain producers receive much less subsidizes than the meat and dairy industry, while fruit and vegetable producers receive almost no subsidies. The government gives subsidies to the meat and dairy industries at a time when Americans are advised to eat less meat and dairy products. High consumption levels of these products are associated with heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

There is an act called the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that might be soon be made law in the United States [Update: the act was approved by the House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, signed into law by president Obama, and is in effect as of 1/1/12]. The act has provisions that label the entire world, including the United States, a battleground. By calling the world a battleground, and the search for terrorists a war, the act is able to get around laws that may be suspended in war time. Our constitutional rights, which many people have died for, are being trampled on. Americans detained under this new law people will not have the right to a lawyer, protection from cruel or unusual punishment, protection from self-incrimination, or any rights.

Americans suspected of committing terrorism, of which the definition is vague, will be held without trial and even tortured. Some say its passage is the equivalent of issuing marital law in the United States. Many republicans and democrats are against the passage of the act.

Senator Carl Levin, who sits on the Armed Services Committee as chairman, revealed to Congress that the Obama administration influenced the wording of the act and resisted changes that would have excluded American citizens from the indefinite imprisonment clause. The president has made sure that the law specifically includes Americans, urging Congress to redraft the legislation with increasingly confusing wording.

On November 17th, the Obama administration issued a policy statement saying explicitly that the president would veto because of a section that deals with the use of the US military in taking custody of suspected criminals.

On Decemeber 14th, the White House announced the law would “not challenge the president’s ability to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the American people,” and therefore “the president’s senior advisers will not recommend a veto.”

Best known as an American singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children’s songs, ballads and improvised works. He frequently performed with the slogan This Machine Kills Fascists displayed on his guitar. His best-known song is “This Land Is Your Land”.

Guthrie traveled with migrant workers from Oklahoma to California and learned traditional folk and blues songs. Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl era during the Great Depression, earning him the nickname the “Dust Bowl Troubadour”. Throughout his life Guthrie was associated with United States communist groups, though he was seemingly not a member of any.

Guthrie was married three times and fathered eight children, including American folk musician Arlo Guthrie. He is the grandfather of musician Sarah Lee Guthrie. Guthrie died from complications of Huntington’s disease, a progressive genetic neurological disorder. During his later years, in spite of his illness, Guthrie served as a figurehead in the folk movement, providing inspiration to a generation of new folk musicians, including mentor relationships with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan.

Here is information about some of the best progressive news organizations, with links to their websites. These organizations create magazines, newspapers, and blogs. They are devoted to reporting about progressive issues, opinions, and news. At the bottom of the post is a link to Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, which is an organization that studies media bias and reports inaccurate or biased information.

The American Prospect – a monthly American political magazine dedicated to liberalism. Based in Washington, DC, The American Prospect is a journal “of liberal ideas, committed to a just society, an enriched democracy, and effective liberal politics” , which focuses on U.S. politics and public policy.

Common Dreams – Non profit News website. Among its notable supporters are Bill Moyers, Ralph Nader, and Don Imus. Common Dreams has never accepted advertisements or special interest money since its inception, sustaining itself through the contributions of its readers, with a few foundation grants along the way. This policy was established to assure its independence as a media outlet.

The Economist This magazine claims it, “is not a chronicle of economics.” Rather it’s goal is, “to take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress.” The Economist generally supports free markets, globalization, and free immigration, has been described as neo-liberal, although occasionally accepting the propositions of Keynesian economics where deemed more “reasonable”. The Economist has also long supported government health and education spending. It also supports social liberalism, including legalized drugs and prostitution. The news magazine favors a carbon tax to fight global warming. According to former editor Bill Emmott, “the Economist’s philosophy has always been liberal, not conservative.”

The Guardian – Founded in 1821, this British daily newspaper identifies with centre-left liberalism and its readership is generally on the mainstream left of British political opinion. The Guardian has the second largest online readership of any English-language newspaper in the world, after the New York Times.

The Huffington Post – Over 9,000 bloggers, from politicians and celebrities to academics and policy experts, contribute to a wide range of topics. The site offers coverage of politics, media, business, entertainment, living, style, the green movement, world news, and comedy.

In These Times – Monthly magazine of news and opinion. Known for its investigative reporting on corporate and government wrongdoing, its coverage of international affairs, and its cultural criticism. It regularly reports on environmental issues, feminism, grassroots democracy, minority communities and the media.

Mother Jones - The most widely read liberal magazine in the United States. It is an American news organization, featuring investigative and breaking news reporting on politics, the environment, human rights, and culture. It has won numerous awards throughout the years.

The Nation – The oldest continuously published weekly magazine in the United States. The periodical is devoted to politics and culture, and is self-described as “the flagship of the left“. According to The Nation’s founding prospectus of 1865, “The Nation will not be the organ of any party, sect, or body. It will, on the contrary, make an earnest effort to bring to the discussion of political and social questions a really critical spirit, and to wage war upon the vices of violence, exaggeration and misrepresentation by which so much of the political writing of the day is marred.”

The New Republic – Supports a largely “left-of-center” stance on fiscal and social issues. TNR is strongly in favor of universal health care. On certain high-profile social issues, such as support of same-sex marriage, they are considered more progressive than the mainstream Democratic Party.

The Progressive – American monthly magazine of politics, culture and progressivism with a pronounced liberal perspective on issues. Known for its pacifism, it has strongly opposed military interventions, such as the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. The magazine also devotes coverage to civil rights, civil liberties, and environmentalism. It has opposed nuclear weapons from August 1945 to the present.

Utne Reader – The magazine collects and reprints articles on politics, culture, and the environment from alternative media sources, including journals, newsletters, and weeklies. The magazine’s writers and editors contribute books, film, and music reviews and original articles focusing on emerging cultural trends.

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting – FAIR describes itself on its website as “the national media watch group” and defines its mission as working to “invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater diversity in the press and by scrutinizing media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints“. FAIR has said that in the range of opinion discussed in the mass media, the right side of a discussion is usually represented by a committed supporter of right-wing causes, while the left side is often represented by a centrist.

Pete Seeger is an American folk musician. In the late 1940′s and early 1950′s he was a member of The Weavers, who topped the charts for the song Goodnight Irene. He was a prominent supporter of unions, and was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He became a popular protest musician in the 1960′s. He wrote the popular songs: Turn, Turn, Turn, We Shall Overcome, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, Little Boxes, and many more.

War is two groups of people fighting and killing each other, usually because of resources and/or ideology. What even gives a government the right to declare war against a foreign nation, and send people there to kill or be killed? If everyone refused to fight, there would be no war.

Losing someone you love for any reason is difficult, and everyone who is killed in war is likely missed by someone. It is estimated that more than 920,000 people died in the recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It seems like most people don’t really question whether war is necessary, and just accept it, even though war is one of the most terrible things imaginable. I am shocked that these wars happened in my lifetime, that the United States went to war against Iraq, and Afghanistan. Tell people you know, politicians, and everyone to stop the war, bring our friends and family members home.

Here are some pro-peace anti-war music videos. I didn’t include songs by Pete Seeger, or Woody Guthrie, I am going to make a separate post about them later. Most of these songs are Vietnam protest songs, some are folk protest songs, and there are a couple more recent songs by U2 and Michael Franti. The songs Imagine and Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon should be in the list, but are in the John Lennon Music Videos post instead if you want to watch them. Enjoy the music!

Barry McGuire – Eve of Destruction A protest song written by P.F Sloan, and recorded by Barry McGuire in 1965. “You’re old enough to kill, but not for voting”, refers to the fact that in the United States, men were subject to being drafted to war at age 18, but could not vote until 21 in all but four states.

Buffalo Springfield – For what it is Worth Released in 1967, the song is a political anthem written by Stephan Stills about a LAPD police assault incident against hippies.

Joan Baez – With God on Our Side Here is what she says before singing: “Perhaps one of the problems in the world today is that every country thinks it has god on its side. As long as everyone struts about with that attitude, it isn’t going to work. I don’t think god could be on the side of anybody who is dropping bombs.”

Country Joe McDonald – What are we Fighting for? Live recording from Woodstock. Here is the first part of the lyrics: “Well, come on all of you, big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again. He’s got himself in a terrible jam way down yonder in Vietnam. So put down your books and pick up a gun, we’re gonna have a whole lotta fun. And it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for? Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn, next stop is Vietnam; and it’s five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates, well there ain’t no time to wonder why, whoopee! we’re all gonna die.”

The Doors – Unknown Soldier This song was on the 1968 Waiting for the Sun album. It was written by Jim Morrison and is about his reaction to the Vietnam War and the way the war was portrayed in the American media.

Bob Dylan – Blowing in the Wind The song was first released on the 1962 album Sing Out. Bob Dylan said in an interview that he probably wrote the song in about 10 minutes. Here are some comments from him about the song, that were published with Sing Out album: “There ain’t too much I can say about this song except that the answer is blowing in the wind. It ain’t in no book or movie or TV show or discussion group. Man, it’s in the wind—and it’s blowing in the wind. Too many of these hip people are telling me where the answer is but oh I won’t believe that. I still say it’s in the wind and just like a restless piece of paper it’s got to come down… no one picks up the answer when it comes down so not too many people get to see and know…”

The Animal – Sky Pilot The song was released in 1968 on the album The Twain Shall Meet. The song is universally interpreted as an anti-war protest song. There are no overt anti-war statements, but no glorification of war either. The anti-war message is conveyed simply by lines such as the final verse: “In the morning they return with tears in their eyes. The stench of death drifts up to the skies. A young soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot, remembers the words ‘Thou Shall Not Kill’.”

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Fortunate Son Released in 1969, it is from the perspective of a man who is being drafted and is not “fortunate” enough to be the son of a senator or millionaire to avoid draft. This song was popular during the Vietnam War and is included in several Vietnam films and video games.

U2 – Bloody Sunday Released in 1983 on the album War. The lyrics describe the horror felt by an observer of the Northern Ireland conflicts, mainly focusing on the Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters and bystanders. The song is noted for its militaristic drumbeat, harsh guitar, and melodic harmonies.

Donovan – The Universal Soldier Donovan’s version of the song was a hit in 1965. Written by Buffy Sainte-Marie in 1964, she said: “I wrote ‘Universal Soldier’ in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It’s about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all.”

Cat Stevens – Peace Train Written by Cat Stevens and first released in 1971. Stevens said “Peace Train is a song I wrote, the message of which continues to breeze thunderously through the hearts of millions. There is a powerful need for people to feel that gust of hope rise up again. As a member of humanity and as a Muslim, this is my contribution to the call for a peaceful solution.”

Edwin Starr – War A soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label in 1969. The song was originally recorded by the temptations, but re-recorded with Starr’s James Brown-influenced soul shout: the single version of “War” was dramatic and intense, depicting the general anger and distaste the antiwar movement felt towards the war in Vietnam, unlike the Temptations original version.

Phil Ochs – What are You Fighting For? A song to someone who is thinking about going off to war. Lyrics: “Just think about the millions who have no job at all, and the men who wait for handouts with their eyes upon the floor. Oh I know you’re set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?”

Phil Ochs – I ain’t Marching Anymore The song criticizes all of American military history from the perspective of a weary soldier who has been present at every single war since the War of 1812. The chorus notes that “it’s always the old who lead us to the war, always the young to fall”, and asks whether the price of military victory has been too high.

Michael Franti – Time to Go Home Released on the 2006 album Yell Fire! The album was inspired by Michael Franti’s trip to the Middle East, visiting Iraq, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. It is a politically charged album, with each track focusing on a controversial issue.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) – An international organization to promote the human rights of people around the world. HRW does things like documents the abuses of human rights, pressures governments to change policies, lobbies for investigations of those responsible for violation of human rights.

Amnesty International – An international mass member human rights organization. They promote human rights by utilizing members for mass letter writing campaigns, calling for the release of political prisoners, documenting abuses of human rights, and lobbying governments to change their policies.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

Article 13.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.
(2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

Article 14.

(1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
(2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Article 15.

(1) Everyone has the right to a nationality.
(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality.

Article 16.

(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
(2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
(3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

Article 17.

(1) Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.
(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.

Article 18.

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Article 19.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Article 20.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
(2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.

Article 21.

(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
(2) Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.
(3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.

Article 22.

Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Article 23.

(1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
(2) Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
(3) Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.
(4) Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.

Article 24.

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

Article 25.

(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
(2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

Article 26.

(1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
(2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.
(3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

Article 27.

(1) Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.
(2) Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.

Article 28.

Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.

Article 29.

(1) Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible.
(2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.
(3) These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Article 30.

Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein.
